MTX and alcohol | Arthritis Information

I'm not a big drinker, mostly because I never want to ruin my cardio work out (yes, I'm that boring) but every year my sister and I take what is known as the sister trip.  It's always a blast because their are no responsibilities, we just do what we feel like doing. And we just laugh together so much.  Anyway, we usually put back a few beers and now I don't know if I can do that with the MTX.  I read somewhere that 2 drinks a month is acceptable.  I don't suppose I can have all of my 24 drinks in one weekend?? HahahaHmm, 24 in one sitting might not be recommended ... MTX or no MTX!! I'd have a few and enjoy myself, but like Joy, I wouldn't drink the day I inj. MXT or the day after.  I have a couple of drinks monthly.  My liver enzymes are pretty good.  Are just slightly elevated but have been stable.  Have a good time.  Lindy

Thanks...we aren't going for a couple of weeks.  My son will be back in the states from Japan next week so actually he might get to be home on leave that weekend.  I'd cancel any trip anywhere to see that boy, sure do miss him.  I guess either way, it's gonna be a good few days.  As for the drinks, thanks you guys for your input.  I guess I won't be gettin all sloppy!

Linda

I asked my rheumy and he said to go ahead and enjoy.  His thouht was...life is too short, you have a crappy disease so go ahead and have a few.  With that said, I've stuck to the same rule, no alchohol day before MTX, day of MTX or day after MTX.....I basically have a couple of glasses of wine and on occassion have had a martini.  Some weeks I have nothing, but when we're with buddies it's nice to be part of the group having a cocktail.  The difference, I'm the driver since I have one or two small glasses of wine with dinner for hours and the rest can swill down martinis or margaritas, lol.

I don't drink at all.

I had  ONE elevated liver enzyme and had to cut way back on the MTX and I swore never again.

I'm saving my liver for MTX.  I dont take  cholesterol meds for that reason.

Virgin strawberry daquiris taste wonderful and  the fun I have is with the people I'm with.

You know what's really stupid?  I have happily been a non drinker for a very long time.  Go to party's have fun, everyone knows I don't drink and no one cares.  It's never a big deal.  But now that I can't drink, I go to  a party and think, geez, I wish I could have a beer.  Stupid RA.  Seriously, I'm too old to be such a big baby feeling sorry for myself.

I probably have had more then I should. Most times the Enzymes are OK.Last test I was at 42. Range went to 40. Dr said to stop MTX for a week. Take Milk Thistle and folic Vacation with your sister once a year?  Live it up and have fun.  Your blood test will tell you if you should not do it again next year.  So go for it and when you return, tell us all about it and share some pics if you can.  Do you think you could really wreck your liver in one weekend?  I was thinking over the course of 4 days drinking maybe 12 beers.  I don't drink liquor and wine hangs me over.  The sister trip won't be the same if I'm drinking diet coke. See.  I do hate this stupid disease.  I try to think, well, if I have I have it.  Might as well be happy and make the most of it.  But man. This just sucks.

Now & Then... I like the way you roll.

My daughter would be dying of embarrasment if she knew I just said that.  Apparently, I'm too old for that

It does make sense.  I just wasn't sure what they mean when they say that drinking is bad for the liver when you take MTX.  Are they talking unfixable damage?  Am I going to turn yellow?  Is it only bad if you over do it or drink very often?

Im 43.  My daughter's 15 and she hates it when I use her slang. But only jokingly hates it because I only jokingly use it.

I say have some beers and have fun!!  As long as your liver enzymes run relatively ok, enjoy yourself!  Its just my opinion of course but life is too short not to have fun once in a while! When I first went on mtx my RD said I could drink but "just don't drink the
whole bottle of wine" and when I asked for clarity she said I could have one,
maybe two. So I do!I'm on Arava which is also processed through the liver, my mom is on mtx, her dr. said NO drinking whatsoever, so she doesn't drink the day before or the two days following her dose

I asked my dr. about the Arava and alcohol and he said it has an effecton the liver if you drink - and I'm quoting him here - "Like a bottle of vodka every day for a LOOOOOONG time". I'm young, 41, Ilove wine, we collect it, go to tastings, etc. I like eto have two glasses a night, one while cooking and dthe other while eating. I think that plus my regular diet of 90 percent healthy food is ok. I think drinking a bottle of vodka every day for a long time can dmage your
liver even without Arava!Ha! No doubt! I think that's what he was getting at. Geez, if I'm downing a bottle of vodka a day, RA is probably the least of my problems!

Enjoy your your sisterhood weekend trip! Sounds like fun.

Have fun on your trip!!!

Yay!! I will, my sis will be happy too!  It's not for another couple of weeks though. My drinking level is about the same as Lovie's, except I don't drink on the dy
of or the day after mtx. I was on 20mg 'til last week (now on 17.5).How's the lower dose working out for you?  I'm on 20, but I'm supposed to come down a bit when I see the doc next week.  I hope he still wants to do that, I had a flare a few days ago. I really want to because I'm losing my hair and I'm hoping to put a stop to that.I can't tell yet because so far it's only been one week. I'm just beginning to phase out my MTX therapy and phase in my AP. I've been on both for the last 4 months. My plan is to slowly reduce my MTX by 2.5mg every 6 weeks.

I keep a daily chart and I will say that since I've been on the AP my overall condition has really improved. But as MTX can improve your consition up to a year from the start (and I started Sept 2006) I'm not sure to what I owe the improvement. I will find out as I decrease the MTX!
