Did you know that they are trying to pass legislation stating that women will be sent home on the same day as the surgery?  Of course this is coming from lobbyists for the insurance companies. I received a form to send in stating why this should not pass.  This is terrible!  This bill has or will be submitted to congress soon. Below is a copy of the bill.

Mastectomy Hospital Bill in Congress

A mastectomy is when a woman's breast is removed in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue. If you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain afterwards. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure. Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after surgery.

Mastectomy Bill in Congress

It takes 2 seconds to do this and is very important ... please take the time and do it really quick!

Breast Cancer Hospitalization Bill - Important legislation for all women.

Please send this to everyone in your address book. If there was ever a time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those times. If you're receiving this, it's because I think you will take the 30 seconds to go to vote on this issue and send it on to others you know who will do the same.

There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on.

PLEASE!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site below. You need not give more than your name and zip code number.

This takes about 2 seconds. PLEASE PASS THIS ON to your friends and family, and on behalf of all women, THANKS

Here is a link for more information on that bill.  It needs to be read into the record 3 times before they can vote on it, so as of now it has not been voted on yet.  It has also been in front of the House also.

You girls!! What is wrong with you? We are women!! We squat in ditches,
have our babies and are back to work by lunch. Come on, buck up!! I mean,
I think they should kick us off the OR table and shove us out the door. Lets
see now, prostatectomies are in at least 3 days, I guess we need more
women out there advocating for us. I have seen complications of
mastectomies, not to mention pain control issues. Put that with a
comorbitity and you are spelling trouble. They used to send babies home on
the same day and that got squashed when they discovered brain damage
from all those babies who were not screened well enough for jaundice. Its
sad that it takes something terrible to happen before they will realize that an
ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That is truly horifying.

Amazing...just amazing what they will do to women.  It is like when they tried to kick out post partum moms and babies 24 hours after birth.  That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this.  I am going to go post this on a couple of other boards I go to so we get more people signing it.

Thanks for posting this!!!

Yeah...and 75% of people with RA are women, so no wonder there's less
funding for RA research than a lot of other diseases.

That, and it's all in our heads.

N & T, thank you so much for posting this. I hope everyone that reads it will take a moment to sign the petition.

My Mother, Grandmother and 3 Maternal Aunts had breast cancer, as did my Mother-in-law. The last was my mother-in-law, who stayed with us after she got out of the hospital. I took care of her drain tube for her, until her first follow up dr. visit. They were all in a lot of pain right after surgery, and need professional care, pain meds and some education about what has happened to them and what they need to do from there.

My poor mother-in-law didn't get any information regarding the services that were available to her, whether or not she could shower right away, or any of the "no-brainer" things they should have told her. She wasn't there long enough.

I hope everyone signs.

Thanks

Nini

Men also have three limp dick drugs to choose fromSo I just signed the petition and have to brag that I lived in Homer when Jewel was growing up, and heard her first sing when she was about 11.  Her Mom was a great friend.  I have really enjoyed her success. And I had a mammogram today - its kismet - I like these new angle machines, didn't hurt at all - bet a woman figured out that idea.

Why not just do the surgery on the kitchen table at home then they wouldn't have to go to hospital at all......have a mobile unit that just goes house to house, think how many they could get done in a day, still charge you for and not even use a hospital bed.

This is ridiculous.  Economics over health is not a good combination.  Bring back the country doctor and little hospital at the end of main street, at least you know what you are getting. (tongue in cheek folks, tongue in cheek)  But something has to give,  you guys ...  give 'em hell, sign that petition, I would if I could make a difference.

At the hospital where I work, several of our surgeons started doing same day surgery on simple mastectomies about a year ago. Now, the only mastectomy patients that spend the night are those that have axillary lymph node dissections in conjunction with the mastectomy. Such a sad state of affairs.
