I have ankylosing spondylitis - this year my illness strikes me bad... it's making my life so miserable. I just don't know who I could turn to - doctors arent much of a help - because they haven't "experience" the type of pain I am experincing right now- they either refer me to another rheumo - and I have to repeat my story over and over again without much of a help.

I'm 28 year old, just started working - this winter in australia is the coolest - my thighs are in pain, sometimes, my veins in my leg area twitches, so I have to limp as I walk.  They seem inflamed.
my legs feel weak - I have to force myself to walk - when i was young, I dreamt that one day my legs get so weak, that I won't be able to walk again.... please.... nooooooo....
getting into the car is a problem... i would have layflat into the car seat in order to get into the car....
I feel like an old man.....

what could be wrong with my legs.... yes I do have the AS strain, sometimes, I get iritis....and stiff neck - and a small lump at the left side of my neck....

i'm 28 - I have to make money in order to survive .... what can I do now ?????????

Hi Jimmy,

Welcome! I'm sorry to know you are battling AS.  I hope you have read some of the posts in the RA forum as there are many of us there with symptoms and frustrations much like the ones you describe.

There are people here of all ages and some have had their Arthritis for many years.  There is always someone here to listen and offer support. You may want to post in the RA forum as everyone is posting there daily. I'm sure you'll get alot of replies and these Arthritises (?) are relitive and symptoms very simular.

Post there and let us know how long you've had AS and what meds your on.  I know everyone would like to welcome you.

I am 45 and newly diagnosed, so don't have much in the way of advice, but I can sure feel your pain and frustration (my hips are pretty bad).

Glad you found us!!

Hi Jimmy,

By the sounds of it, we're going through very much the same thing. It's great to have the chance to talk to people who can actually understand what chronic pain is. I've had AS since I was 16, now I'm 25. Mine is localized in my spine and this year has been absolutely unbearable for me aswell, I feel your pain! I feel like no matter what I do I can't get it under control. All my little tricks (hot showers, exercise, stretching, meds, topical creams, etc) seem to have stopped working and I'm left imobobile and very grumpy. I recently became a Primary teacher, and sometimes I worry if this was the right career; benifits are great but will I be able to keep up with the kids in a few years? Ha ha, I always refer to myself as the 25 year-old in the ninety year old body!

went to see the rhem on Friday, and I was shock to hear that I also have osteo-arthristis in my hip/pelvis area. most of my cartilages were loss, that's why I am experiencing excruciating pain in my leg and knee - no wonder why AS drugs doesn't help me with my leg...

why did it toook that long for doctors to  diagnois with this disease????
i am fed up with my local GP, and my previous Rhem.. at least they could explain to me about cartilage loss and take more in depth X-rays on my whole body.... and not just bits and pieces...

I feel doomed. at the age of 28 - with this disease - I don't know whether the pain will go away or not - but i really worry about my future and why job is suitable for me to do....being single - and my relationship with my siblings isn't too good - I don't know who I could depend on - or survive alone....
