MTX and Tylenol | Arthritis Information

Just had an appt. with my RD today.  My liver count was up to 46 from 41 the last time.  He asked if I knew why it would be up.  I said it might have been that glass of wine at the spa and later a margarita for dinner.  He asked if I was taking Tylenol.  The answer was yes, two Tylenol PM every night.  He said he suspected it was the Tylenol that caused my liver number to be up.  He said he would have to check it again in 4 weeks, instead of the 8 weeks he had anticipated.  He also told me to be careful with my alcohol intake (I usually have one glass of wine or less each week - - maybe that Margarita was a little too much....but it sure was good).  He has been so cautious with me about drinking and had finally relented to one glass of wine a week.  Having that Margarita was actually my own test to see if anything would change.....and maybe it did, but hopefully it was the Tylenol.  He gave me Lunesta to replace the Tylenol.

Either way it's good that they're keeping a close eye on things and catch things early; right? Please keep us updated....it's a concern many of us on MTX have. Hope your numbers go down quickly.

The amount you've been drinking is very small in my opinion. I guess our bodies all absorb things differently. I take twice as much MTX as you do and likely drink twice as much as well. I guess things could all change over night so I hate to even say it out loud.....but my numbers have never been abnormal.

It's all so confusing isn't it?

Thanks Lovie, I sure agree that our bodies all react differently too all of this disease and medications.  The RD told me today that I was very unusual to be showing so much improvement just being on MTX because I had high RA and CRP (I think that was it).  Good thing because I can't take the Enbrel's, Humira's, etc. because I'm a post-cancer patient.

My poor mother got RA at 36, never knew to take MTX.  She lived on pred. and also took gold shots.  She did seem to have an iron stomach when taking all the meds she took over the years.  Too bad nothing helped and she was in bad pain and very, very crippled.

I'm just so thankful I'm doing so much better for now at least.

I spoke to my pharmacist before taking tylenol and he said it was o.k. while on MTX. I will limit my intake after reading this!

My rheumy told me to take only tylenol when I was on mtx.  He also told me NO alcohol.

Hi, Thanks so much for the heads up on this. When my doc's office didn't call me thursday last week I started taking several Tylonol a day! Ugh. So, just Wed. I got the office and they suggested going back on 15 mgs. of prednisone. I'd probably be better today if I'd started that last week! Dang.

Anyway, I appreciate knowing the tylonol can add to our already compromised 'liver' situation! My gosh, it is such an all consuming world of doc's/drugs/pain/ stiffness, we live in. Lynda
