Prednisone/Been awake most of 3 days! | Arthritis Information

Hi all,

I think the pred is helping with my over all well being, but honestly I am having trouble sleeping. I don't take sleep aids so I listen to my new MP3 player all night! Not tired though???

Lynda

((((Lynda))))  I hear you!  I was put back on Prednisone about three weeks ago and I still am not sleeping through the night.  I have, however, read many good books!  I'm am the reading QUEEN!

My doc gave me some Lunesta to try and it does help me for about 3 hours.  I don't like to take sleep aids if I can help it - but when I get to the point where I am just dead tired and exhausted, but cannot sleep, I will take one to get a couple of hours.  I've not yet found any answers - but wanted to let you know that you are not alone.

Hugs,

Jen

Hi Lynda, that was the worst side effect for me.  I functioned on about 4 to5 hours of sleep a day for several years.  I'd sleep whenever I could.  Morning, noon, or night. For the last 4 months I've been sleeping all night and I feel so much better because I've been getting 8 hours a night.  You're on a short course of Pred. and will tapering soon, so just go with the flow.  Not much you can do, so no reason to make yourself miserable and try to sleep, or lay there and worry about not sleeping.  I started a journal and did a lot of travel writing during those sleepless nights and like Jen I read all the time.  I was fortunate because I didn't have children or a job and could sleep when I wanted to.  Sleep deprivation also causes us to feel worse but yours will be short term.  I hope that you can taper off and stay off the most dreaded of the meds.  Take it easy, relax, and go to the library and get all those books you've been meaning to read.  Take care.  Lindy.

What sleep aids are you taking?  OTC or prescribed?

A good way to relax before bed time could be a nice warm bath with some lavender in it.  If you can't get in and out of the tub maybe a nice warm shower.  Also I turn down my lights when it is getting to be bedtime.

ONE WORD.... AMBIEN!!
It works great for me that I now cut it in half and seem to fall right to sleep....  now if my Bladder would only go to sleep too, then I may possibly have ONE night without visiting John..

My hubby tried everything for insomnia and Ambien was the only thing that worked. What time of day are you taking the pred? I have to take all of mine in the morning (up to 20 mg) so it won't keep me awake. My dr. told me this is okay. Hope you find something that helps.

Laker

I was having trouble sleeping too when my allergy started bothering me and made me dizzy.  So I started using Dramamine, taking 1/2 of 50mg. at night so that I would not be dizzy in the morning.  I now sleep like a log!  It does say on the container that it can make you drowsy and it's just enough to let me fall asleep and stay asleep, except of course to visit john.  So if your doc agrees with this, try it!  I also take my prednisone in the morning and have worked down to 5mg. So far, so good. Let us know if you try it.  Perhaps we are onto something here! LOL

Thanks everyone, great suggestions. I don't feel bad or anything, just not sleeping. Hopefully, tonight. I take the pred in the mornings usually but remember taking 2 (5mgs) in the morning and 1 (5mg) at night yesterday! Hummm. good tip. Lynda

I was told to take the meds before 8 am if I wanted to sleep at all.Lavender or rose helps.  I have it in a spray bottle and will cover my pillow in it or I have a lotion.  Mine is very strong, but I use it during stressful times like parent/teacher meetings.  I have had one parent that complained my room smelled like trees.  Well, if they can't tell the difference between a tree and a flowering plant then poo on their shoe!!(as my daughter would affectionately say!)Poo on their Shoe!! I love it!! LyndaWhat's wrong with smelling like trees anyway?  My favorite candle scent is fresh cut grass. GAP used to make perfume in that scent.  It's my all time favorite.  You can only find it on ebay now at stupid prices now though.  Too bad.I used benydryl. For the most part I got some sleep. I was going nuts without sleep and was afraid to start taking a prescription. Found this on another thread:

When the effects of prednisone were the worse for me...I think I just got used to no sleep. I tried Lunesta , sonato...No help My rhumy says she gives all her RA insomniacs Flexeril 10  1/2-1 2 hours before bed and I must say it seems to work better than the sleeping pills!

My doc will give me Ambien with pred if I need it.
