Rhabdomyolysis and/or Fibro | Arthritis Information

A nurse friend just told me my recurrent, elevated, muscle pain could be Rhabdomyolysis, a side effect from my Crestor for high cholestrol. This is pretty scarey, it can cause renal failure and even death. UGG! I've been on it for 3 years and should have made a connection. My liver numbers have alway been perfect so i didn't give it a thought. Just something else to worry about i guess. Has anyone else had problems with statin drugs? I had fibro long before high C so how would i know the difference?

Another question i have is what kind of mattress do most of you use? I know these are pesky questions but IM IN PAIN! Sorry, didn't mean to yell

I have the pillow top mattress, but hurt my hips and back too much, so I    have been sleeping on a 3 inch memory foam topper.   It's really comfortable, however, I wake up with horrible back pains. I don't think that's due to the mattress topper, probably all the other stuff I have!

My mom had terrible muscle problems from several of the drugs in that same class.  She had to quit taking them.My cholesterol is shy high and we haven't done anything for it yet, it was over 260!

Moana, my mother has tried every type of cholesteral medication the doctor can think of and they all cause her such misery she refuses to take them.  She gets to the point where she can barely walk, just because of the pills.  I think this is definitely something you should at least explore.  Perhaps you can go off the medication for a while and see if any of your discomfort fades, under the supervision of your physician.

Good luck to you.  My mattress is a Select Comfort Sleep Number air mattress and I love it.

Well the memory foam is what my ortho dr. recommended so i guess i'll stick with it for now. My neck and shoulders are so sore and stiff this morning  am ready to throw it out. I guess it gets to stay for now.

kweenb what did you mother do for her high C and did she get better from the muscle pain after she quit the medicine?

Michele have they not cautioned you about your high numbers? My dr. went bonkers when my C became 275, your not too far behind.

Hi Moana. I can't help with the statins question. But  I love the bed I have. Its a queen size adjustable with latex foam mattress.

My husband realized, about 5 years ago, that the only place I could get comfortable was in my recliner. He instantly got on the internet and started looking for adjustable beds. Found one that looked good and had it delivered the next day.

The latex foam mattress is the most comfortable I've ever slept on. The company recommended a firm, which sounded too hard for me. However, they were right. A firm latex foam is different from a firm inner spring mattress. It gives good support without feeling like sleeping on a board.

I have to sleep on my back but also have severe back pain. This has enough "give" to feel really good.

Good luck with both your questions. Hope you can find a really good bed.

Be well,

Nini

Hillhoney,my nurse friend told me that more and more people are having serious problems with their statin drugs but the Pharmascutical(sp) Companies want to down play the risks because these drugs are the biggest seller markets in decades. Astra-Zenica(sp) alone make HUGE profit on their statins. The research I did said that only 5% reported the muscle  issues but Mayo Clinics said their study confirmed at least 20% and possibly double that which doesn't get reported or is passed off as Fibro. How frustrating all this is? Oh by the way I was thinking of a sleep number bed as my next choice, may have to look further into it. Thanks for the tips

moana, I have high chol, especially the triglycerides, but I refused to go on statin drugs because I already have fibro and didn't want to risk the muscle problems.  My old PCP didn't understand and I finally said to him that I'd much rather have a heart attack and die then live with even more muscle pain than I already have.  He didn't think there was much of a risk, but my rheumy tells me he's seen lots of patients with muscle problems exacerbated by the statins.

I'm on Zetia which is processed differently in the body and so far no effects from it.  I'm also thinking of trying a supplement like Cholest-Off from Nature Made...I use some of their other products and have found them to be a reputable vitamin/supplement company.

As for beds, I don't really like the memory foam type ones because it makes me too warm.  In the past I just got a nice firm (but not too firm) mattress to support my low back (herniated discs there and in my neck).  But I just bought a new mattress that is softer because the pain in my neck, shoulders, and arms are getting worse.  That's the basic recommendation I've seen...firm but not too firm for low back issues, plush for upper back/neck problems and muscle problems.  I also have a molded pillow that supports my neck and has an adjustable height, which I love.
