Too much blood! | Arthritis Information

I went to the periodontist today.  I had a bone graft in March and he was taking out the gortex covering and replacing it with different type.  There was so much blood.  He asked me several times if I was taking aspirin, which I'm not.  Could it be from the Methotrexate?  I was taking Relafen when I had the bone graft and I didn't bleed like this, so I know it isn't from the that. Are you taking fish oil? It's a blood thinner.

Oh wow hon, I dunno.  Let us know if you figure it out.

Peace & Love...Neasy

I'm not taking fish oil either.

I just googled and it says that methotrexate can lower blood platelets.  That's what helps the blood clot, right?

MTX is a blood thinner.  Did your periodontist know in advance that you were on the mtx??  It's my understanding that before any dental or medical procedure you have to stop the mtx.  Not just due to your body not being able to fight infections, but because of the blood not clotting.  And yes, the platelets is a factor in clotting.

I told his assistant when she took me back.  She never said anything to him so I didn't think anything about it.  It's odd that 7.5 mg would make that much difference, it's such a low dosage.

Do you know how long you have to go off the methotrexate before surgery?  I'm supposed to get a dental implant soon.

I just had my relafen refilled and had a mandatory consult because I am now taking mtx. She told me to watch for bruises that spread and blood in stools. The two drugs used together can cause bleeding problems. Super! Scary stuff we're taking.

It varies from doctor to doctor their opinion on how long to be off mtx etc. before surgery.  I think (I'm not totally sure) general rule of thumb is 2 weeks before and after.

Call your periodontist and let them know you are on the mtx.  If they are like

Good luck with that implant.  You are a braver woman that I!!!!  I would have to be like totally sedated before I even got there lol.

Monk320,

Well that wasn't good news at all about the MTX and Relafen.  My pharmacist is really good at telling me those types of things too, but I didn't get my MTX and Relafen filled at the same place.  I get the Relafen from a mail-in pharmacy.  Maybe I'll try and stop the Relafen.

Are you still taking both of them?

Yuppers. I'm only on a very low dose of mtx, so it shouldn't be an issue right now she said. But hells bells, shouldn't the doctor tell us these things? I don't know how long I'll last on the mtx. I hate putting a cancer drug in my system that is so unbelievably harsh.
