How does MTX effect you? | Arthritis Information

Morning everyone. I'm into my 2nd week of MTX, a very low dosage btw & I already feel like there are crazy things going on in my body. Like, within 4 days I felt and looked bloated. I'm already overweight, & this is noticeable. I also have a gas problem. Bad. All day, every day. Little silencers that make my dog get up and leave the room. I woke my husband out of a dead sleep the other nite! He thought one of our cats had crapped in our room! How soon will I feel benifits from this drug? And what other side effects do I have to look forward to?

Thanx - Monk

MTX didn't do much for me till enbrel was added.  I have noticed some hair loss, but everyone (that I've asked) says they can't notice it.  Overall, MTX has not been a negative experience for me.  Hope your side effects wear off soon.  And I say go ahead and blame the cat.  No one will ever know and the cat won't mind!!!

Basicly with a chemical sensitivity many drugs can cause chemical reactions that can swell you up etc.

Methotrexate is the most harsh drug for RA that i have tried.  I instantly swell up and inflame with edema from my toes to my neck in joints and just in the skin and muscles.  My breathing also become irratic as i get swelling in my lungs.

The only reason i found out about the chemical problems is because my breathing was bad and i was diagnosed from my allergist.  Basicly it is an allergy to chemicals like bug spray, cleaners, laundry detergent, hair spray, deoderant, food preservatives etc.

If you think this is the type of swelling you are having, you need to get off the drug as it will cause worse problems.  They think my breathing came as a result to using RA drugs.  So my asthma and bronchitis is both a good and bad thing.  Without it i wouldn't have been diagnosed as my doctors don't believe in multiple chemical sensitivity unless you has the intrinsic asthma.

It will be hard if this is what you have because my body rejects all drugs except prednisone.  I have to stop pred once a year for a couple months due to women's cycle problems, but i can't get back on it again.

I wish you well.

Oh, nausea and stomach problems are a regular problems with mtx.  In fact, they are the biggest reaction.  I suggest talking with your doctor about some stomach meds to help you.

I too am overweight and didn't notice for a couple years that my legs were horribly swollen.  Once on the proper meds (for me advair and prednisone) i can see how thin they have gotten since.

I'm sorry about your side effects.  The way your worded your message was very entertaining though.  I understand your pain!

I was on mtx for a year and had fatigue, nausea, brain fog, gas, burning, etc.  Unfortunately for me it did not diminish, but there is a high probability it will with a bit of time.  My doc always told me 5 weeks - give it 5 weeks.

I hope that things improve and the silencers become non-existent.  :)  Take care and let us know how you are doing.

Thanx for the input, really. I know a sense of humor is essential dealing w/ this disease. I hang on tight to it. What about sinus problems? I feel like I'm catching a cold, but I'm not. I've got superglue for snot and now the inside of my nose is scabbing. Painful & I can't breathe. I've noticed a little constriction in my chest. I'm just glad I'm not alone w/ some of these symptoms.

hey kel, not taking the folic yet. Forgot. I'll start again tomorrow. I just read up on it and it should also help w/ my energy levels. Thank God. Thanx for your input as well, Kel

Just kidding MonkMonk, my hubby heard me laughing from another room, so I shared this with him and he too is laughing!  Your way with words just cracked me up.

Monk...gotta love your way with words.  It is good to have a sense of humor with all of this.  If I didn't...I would go more nuts than I already am!!!

Try to take your mtx like after you eat and see if that helps at all.  I had such bad tummy issues on the pills that I switched to injecting it.  Tummy issues left and the side effects I have now are being really tired the day after my injection and thinning hair.

Personally...I love having those SBD's (silent but deadly lol).  It is revenge on the dog and hubby LOL.  Can anyone say dutch oven???  Hang in there Monk.   Years ago, when I was teaching in Junior School, I had big probs with IBS.   And I was plagued with those "silent but violent" occasions many times in the classroom.  When I was aware that it was "on", I would quickly move to the other side of the classroom, and then stand there and watch the fun.

 This thread is so hilarious

My DH embarrasses me to death when were at Wal_Mart or somwhere like that, he has really bad SBD's and then walks off leaving me to "hold the bag". I could kill him
