Foot surgery | Arthritis Information

Has anyone here had surgery on their feet? I posted several months ago about not being able to find shoes that would fit my badly deformed feet from RA.

Met with my rheumy & he said there is nothing he can do for them. Surgery is only option.

I am interested in length of recovery time. This is a hard decision for me to make as in the past 5 yrs I have had a mastectomy for breast cancer, went through treatment, then had major flare of RA. Had kidney surgery hast year & then had another major flare. Can’t seem to get back to where I was a year ago. Also fibro is flaring. Ache all over!

I don’t post because my hands are also terribly deformed. They are hurting really bad after this little bit of typing. Below is a site with pictures of RA hands. Mine look like  the 55 yr old woman’s in the second row: I have had RA going on 27 yrs.

The only advantage I see to having the surgery is finally after 25 yrs possibly being able to buy some pretty shoes.

Please , Please, Please, anyone who must have surgery, ask all the doctors 'what will I do about my RA' while i am healing???? You need a plan, prednisone?, or what? I don't know, but the meds we take interfer with healing so they want you off of them. You won't know how long you will suffer between the surgery and the gettting the meds to work for you again! Oh, my gosh it took me 3 months before they would even give me mtx and Remicade, the pred 15 mgs, saved my life and the RA meds are still not working well enough for me to get off of Prednisone?! 6 months later...... LyndaLeeAnn,
I had major reconstruction done on both my feet about 4 and 5 years ago.  My first bit of advice to you is:  find an EXCELLENT surgeon.  I have heard so many stories of persons who had bad experiences.  I had a very successful outcome with mine.
I had the surgeries done about 6 months apart.  After the surgery I was totally off my feet for 6 and 9 weeks.  I used a wheelchair and also a walker.  It took about 1 year for me to feel as if I was back to "normal"; walking 1 mile per day and getting out of bed in the morning and not putting shoes on right away.
Again, I was very fortunate to find an excellent surgeon.  I didn't like him after my first appointment, but he was confident he could help me and he had an awesome staff.  I did grow to appreciate him.
My second bit of advice is:  follow the doctors recommendations.  I was SO ready to add weight to my foot prior to the six and nine weeks, but I stuck to the orders and I really feel it made a difference.
Good luck to you.  I hope you find a relief soon.  Not having working feet is one of the worst.  It compounds so many other problems.
