Flu shot / pneumonia vaccine? | Arthritis Information

Does anyone here know for sure if we can take these?  I know the flu shot is not a live vaccine, so it should be OK.  The shot can't make you sick.  What about the pneumonia vaccine? Sara38565.5369560185I haven't tried yet but I would ask my doc.  I never take anything without asking because of all the meds. That's my plan, but I'd like to be armed with ya'll's experiences as well.  I teach middle school so I am around a ton of little germ carriers. I have
had both vaccines. A couple of years ago I had a RD appointment and I
had a really bad cold. My dr. wasn't comfortable giving me a flu shot
since I was sick at the time but wanted me to take the pnuemonia one.
This vaccine lasts for a number of years. Since then, I have had a flu shot
every year. Last year I got one piece of cake even with the shortage cause
I have RA. I am young, and other then the obvious-healthy, but due to
immunosuppresents I was considered at risk.

Now...I hate to get shots so I have to psyche myself up every time....

BeckyI thought we were not supposed to get the flu shot but we could get the pneumonia.  I had the pheumonia vaccine - no problem.Actually its strongly recommended to get both.  I got yelled at by m doc last year because I hadn't had them yet.  It has to be the flu shot though not the nasal spray as that contains a live virus.

I think it has to do with the vaccine being a live virus or not.  Oscar's doctor said it was okay for him to have the flu shot because it was a dead virus, he actually strongly reccomended it.

Now a live virus is another story.  Oscar has been immunized and thrown into a nasty flare before.....that's why I was afraid of the flu shot until I asked the Dr.

Now the Pneumonia shot is a different story...went to the PCP for a general exam and fun female stuff and she gave me the Pneumonia shot and my tetnus shot (ouch!) I told her i couldnt get the flu shot and she said that the pneumonia shot was not manifested in eggs so i was ok. she said it was not a live vaccine so i should not get sick from it. Now i dont know if it was a reaction or just a bug at the time... but i did get sick about a week later. just a cold, not pneumonia...

Hope this helps...

It all helps a lot!  Thanks, ya'll.

Now that I'm on biologics this year I intend to look into it for sure. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Funny--we must have the same BCBS nurse.  Mine keeps suggesting the same, and it's what made me wonder.  I have an appointment with my rheumy on Friday, and will let you know what he says.
