Is it common to feel bad taking an FMLA day. I have yet to take one but there have been a few that I should have. Also is it abusing the system to take one because of fatigue?

Jay

What's an FMLA day?  See, when you work for your bro, if you need a day, you can take one.  But yes, I think you should have your day, the system be damned!!  (ok, Jay I do cheat sometimes as I am well within my city limits)No, not when it is the amazing fatigue that comes with RA...that is called sick, unwell, ill. Is it abusing the system...you have to be kidding? Take what you need, if you can.

Fatigue is a huge, annoying, and very real part of RA.  I feel it is not abusing the system.  FMLA is there to protect your job so when you really feel the need to use it...then use it.

If you have someone that cares for you when you are doing really bad they can get FMLA also so they can stay home and care for you when you are really bad.  .

I always felt bad about this too, but not anymore. FMLA is unpaid leave so it's not like you are getting extra sick time or PTO anyway. And, once you are approved for FMLA you do not need to say why you are taking it. My HR manager told me to use it if I don't feel well and stop worrying about it - they would rather have me take FMLA and come in the next day feeling better than have me working in a state of exhaustion. REally, it's okay, go ahead and use it. Your job is protected once your employer approves you for FMLA, they can't let you go for using it. I am taking a 2-5 day FMLA to go to Cleveland Clinic next month and no one has said a word about it. I told my boss I would call him to let him know when I will be back. He was fine with that.

Thanks to all of you have shared your input so far. I new the answer I just feel guilty when I think about using it.

Jay

Hi Jay:

That's what FMLA is for, also sick time.  It is your right to take this time when you need - so please, if you can, release that guilt.  You need to take those days to take care of yourself.  If you do not rest - you will not be doing your employer any favors in the long run.  Please take care.

OK...someone please tell me.  What does FMLA stand for?  It must be something something leave of absence?  This will bug me till I know, so please don't make me wait too long.  Thankyou.

Family Medical Leave Act   It is a federal program protecting employees that need to be off work fro a LOT of reasons.

I hope you can sleep tonight now that you know.

Most companies allow 12 weeks off per year. You need a doctors form filled out for your condition/s. Some companies (mine did) will let you use al your vacation/sick time to pay yourself, otherwise, its unpaid time off.

DO NOT feel bad using it. That is exactly why it is a federal law. You have job protection, so if you are sick, or tired, or sick and tired  :)
Then take time off. If you feel really guilty, work 1/2 the day.
Thank you Ray... I will sleep well tonight.
