trouble sleeping with the Prednisone | Arthritis Information

I was wondering if anyone is complaining about trouble sleeping. I tried Tylenol P.M. and Ambien. Nothing helps. I take 20mg of Prednisone in the morning. I have only been diagnosed with PMR about a month.

The Prednisone just keeps me up!!

If anyone can help me get to sleep I would appreciate it!!

I take 15 mg at 7 am and notice that some nights i can't sleep till 2 am/ My
only solution is that I nap in the afternoon if I have time, I often crash mid
day amyesy if I have an avtice morning

vest of luck... sleep tight

I take 6 mg in the a.m.. I could have another life in the wee early hours of most morning. It is quite irritating. There is nothing on tv. I do some quilting then. Fortunately, I can sleep until 8 or so..but I think it is just something we have to live with.

Thank-you all for the information as far as my sleeping habits are concerned. Guess I'll have to try my best and count sheep!

JoyMy doctor upped my pred to 20 mg yesterday but split it into a morning
and night dose. Thankfully I had already read your post, so I asked about the
sleep issue. We decided that it would be worth being pain free for the short
tem and that we would look at ambien if necessary... may be counting sheep
with you soon!
pgrI initially found I slep incredibly well on pred due to the relief of pain and discomfort, which was making it hard to get a good sleep. On pred I feel lighter, softer, more bendy and supple and much more comfortable in the body. The bed is heaven, like lying on clouds and being rocked by angels!  LOL on the previous day... Think of us anyway!
I also didnt sleep for a YEAR the bed was such torture! The 1st night on pred
was this incredible ddep restful sleep. The pred sleeplessness kicked in later
and I still sleep more than pre-pred. Even if I am up to 2 I get few hours of
realy restful sleep due to that wonderful comfort

Hi all!

When I started on 20 mg of prednisone in June 2006, I was given a prescription for a falling-asleep pill because I was told that prednisone made me "high" and I might have problems to sleep. I got a prescription for Imovane, which doesnīt seem to be commersially available in the US. The active ingredient is Zopiclone. I used this in the beginning but for a year or so I havenīt needed it. I am now on 3.5 mg. I am male and will be 70 in August and I now sleep mostly 11:30 - 06:00. I think women need more sleep. After I have spent $ 270 I get free medicine 12 months starting from the first purchase. It is part of the Swedish welfare system and is one reason we pay high taxes. If you have PMR it is good to have this favour. We get a rebate from the first purchase and then the rebate gets better and better until you have paid the $ 270. Similarly with doctorīs visits. There, the amount is max. $ 135 in a 12 month period. I get free blood tests also included in that cost and also X-rays etc.

took 20 mg pred up from 15 yesterday with 10 mg 7 am 10 mg 7 pm. I fell
asllep at 11 pm. Woke up at 12:15 am mind racing until 3 am, then
overslept till 9:30 am. Took 10 mg then and was SPEEDING from about noon
until about 4 pm... hmmmmmm wonder what tonight will bring. Buying
tylenol PM in case. Doctor said she woud prescribe sleeping meds if nec, si I
will call her tomorrow if necessary.

On the other hand, I was ALMOST pain free today for the 1st time in 14
months! Trade OffsI think I'm quite rare, but predisolone has the reverse effect on me - I need
loads more sleep than I used to. I usually get about 9 to 10 hours, and
sleep very heavily. I have talked to one or two others that have been
affected like this, but I know we are the exceptions.

MargaretMargaret,

I, too, slept really well while on prednisone, but I know in my case it was because I no longer had the pain to keep me awake.

Hi Reni

It's definitely not just the absence of pain because I need about 3 hours
more than I did before I started with PMR. So it's either the pred or the PMR
itself - and I suppose I should be really grateful that I can sleep so easily.

In the 3 weeks between starting with PMR and getting the pred I found
sleeping very difficult because of the pain - the pred was such a relief.

MargaretMargaret,

It's nice that you can sleep so well now, even if it is longer than you are used to. I don't sleep too well any more, but hesitate to take any sleeping pills long term. Will ask the rheumatologist about it next time I see him. The trazodone doesn't seem to work as well as it did years ago. It is my back pain that keeps me awake now. Dear non-sleepers,

I have never been on more than 15mgm of prednisilone ( also on 25mgm methotrexate IMI weekly), am down to 2.5mgm pred. now, and yes I found that sleeping was impossible, even when there were times through the day that I felt exhausted and I could have slept anywhere...but i did not.

Early on I saw a natural therapist , who advised me to try ReDormin (flordis herbal remedy). It is manufactured in switzerland and I buy it in Australia.

It contains valeriana officinalis root1.25g   (valerian)
                humulus lupulus fruit 360mgm    (hops)

I ran it past my rheumy and my G.P. and both said OK

The original practitioner said  take 1 or 2 as they can sometimes give you nightmares. I have had no problems but they are contra- indicated in patients with severe renal impairment or hepatic impairment.

I have liver function tests done monthly because of the methotrexate, I have not had an alcoholic drink for 18mnths. think I am nearly over it now......although a glass  of red may be nice when i am well again!!!

Hope this helps you    Zali It is really interesting to me that the pred seems to work 1 way or the
other... as I said my 1st few nights I was really speeding - now I am
exhausted and fall asleep quickly. The slightest noise wakes me (there are
many noises in my house ) and once I am awake my mind is racing, but
when it is time to wake in the morning I have a hard time. I am hoping this
too will even out...
I too have in the past found homeopathic or natural remedies to be helpful...
certainly worth a try for those slepless aroung the world!
sweet dreams to you all
phylYes, me too, get exhausted, fall asleep easily, have a pretty good sleep, then wake up in the early hours, think and fret for anything from 30 minutes to 2 hours, then fall asleep again and sleep well till it's time to get up.
