sulfazine es

Does anybody take Sulfazine es? I have started taking it and my rheumatologist said that i should not have any alcohol with it. She seemed very serious about it, but I haven't found anything on the warnings label or on the internet about alcohol and Sulfazine interactions. Not that I really drink alot, but I miss having a glass of wine or 2 with my wife. I am just wondering if anybody else on Sulfazine has had a drink while on Sulfazine?

I hateRa... Love the nick!!! its fits well for this forum... oh and WELCOME!!!

there was a conversation about drinking and MTX a while back.. i found it and instead of bumping it here (it didnt exactly fit your queston) Ill tell you that it is on page 11 of the RA Topics and its called "MTX vs Arava talk to me"...If you look there you will find the conversation about drinking and MTX. I do not know that answer for sulfa drugs, as I am not on the (highly allergic) If you miss the forum (it gets pushed to page 12) just keep going backwards til you find it.

Sorry if this isnt the answer, but at least I am locating info for ya! keep reading. lots of INfo here!!!

WELCOME IHATERA!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for that info Unicorn! Glad you like the nick! By reading the posts I think most people on these boards can relate to hating ra. It is really cool to know that there are other people who feel like I do and deal with the same problems. I am bound and dertimined to find out the alcohol interaction with sulfazine. I don't want to ask my rheumatologist because she might misinterperet that I am an alcoholic which I am not.

Thanks for the welcome!

I am not crazy posting at 6am on a sat morn, but ra wakes me up alot in the wee hours of the morning.

Welcome ihatera,

your name made me laugh.

I take Asulfidine, which is the same as what you are taking.  they both are sulfa drugs.  One is just a generic form of the other.

I inserted some information from a web site I saw and here is what is says about interactions it may cause when used with alcohol.

.....Are there interactions with food or beverages?.....

The drug may be taken with milk. Use alcohol with caution until the combined effect has been determined. Sulfasalazine can increase the intoxicating effects of alcohol.......

Here is the website and it gives more detail on the use of this drug.

http://www.gicare.com/pated/sulfasalazine.htm

I hope this helps you.

I refrain from Alcohol because of the broad variety of medications I take.  But sometimes, so I don't stick out like a sore thumb, when with my family or friends who may want to have a drink, I order a Tonic water with a twist of Lemon or Lime...

Hope you and your family have a great weekend.

Thanks for the info. I think I will try a glass of cabernet sauvingon and see how it goes. Bet I will sleep better.Micheal...I don't take the sulfa drug but I everytime I have tried to drink a glass of wine I get a stomach ache.  I also feel alot worse when it wears off - a couple of nurses told me that white wine makes arthritis worse...maybe red doesn't! Cheers!Luluihatera,  I got to get off these pain meds.  I thought your nick was some exotic indian name.  DOH  Kinda like Hiawatha HEY IHATERA....COOOOOL NAME.  I TAKE SULFASALAZINE AS WELL.  DR DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT DRINKING AND THE DRUG BUT I TOLD HER I RARELY DRINK WHEN I STARTED MTX SO MAYBE SHE JUST MAKE THE ASSUMPTION.   ONCE IN A BLUE MOON I'LL HAVE A GLASS OF WINE OR A BEER.  BUT DON'T LISTEN TO ME, JUST GOT OUT OF ER A FEW DAYS AGO FOR BLEEDING ULCERS.  MAY CHECK OUT ABOVE POST AS WELL.......

okay so the wine didn't have any affect with sulfa. But I still can't sleep. I have insomnia, i think it is caused by ra. I will try 2 glasses this week. love the grapes lulu.

My 3 year old must not know I have ra, because he kicked me out of bed again at 2am.

IHATERA....The only thing that helped me sleep soundly at night was Ambien...allow a full 8 hours sleep minimum but you awaken refreshed without the groggy feeling.  Tried some of the others, Lunesta and Atriptaline (sp)  and I was a zombie all day.  RA keeps me fatigued and that's the last thing I needed~  !!  I also have Fibro, a double whammy, and was so fatigued I could no longer hardly function.  I'm on 200 mg Provigil a day now and a new woman.  I feel "normal" during the day and guess what, another good side effect is I no longer have to take a sleep aid.  I sleep soundly at night without waking up 100 times a night and awaken refreshed.   At last, a positive side effect of a drug!!

Hi  and welcome, i was never given a warning about sulphasalazine and alcohol, but was given the warning about white wine and RA.  I take 2500-3000mg a day and on nights like friday, i lost count at 7 pints of lager !  I'm not an alcoholic! honest!  I just had to let my hair down, but i guess you could say it may make effects quicker or something like that, i can't drink as much as i used to, but had put it down to not drinking very often anymore.    I know this probably sounds awful to some of you, but hey, i'm still human!  i think    couldn't tell you about effects on liver etc and wouldn't want to know, but my last tests were ok!        oh and i know how the insomnia goes too, was still awake most of fridaynight even after going out!

hugs all round

good job Tori! I agree we are still human. 7+ pints? are you married? My secret is that on ocassion I will go out on a Friday night with a friend of mine and just get bloody wasted. At lease 6 or 7 shots with some mixed drinks. So I guess I miss that now that I am on the sulfazine. Again I am not an alcoholic, but it sure does feel good to let loose even if you pay for it for like the next 2 days. I have 23 employees, and a 3 year old boy, and did I mention painful RA, so it feels good to have an excessive amount of drinks once in a while. The insomnia is good and bad, because I get a ton of stuff done while the rest of the world is sleeping, but during the day I just want to curl up in my office chair and doze off into never never land.

  Hi ihatera,

so the 'vino didn't help'.  Like Karen it may be time for something with a kick to it.  I used Tylenol Sleep before I went on Ambien.  Worked pretty good for awhile untill I had to start using them all the time, so I went to the doctors and got a  script for a sleeping aid, which was cheaper than the Tylenol (I get my meds. for free) but then I started getting up at midpoint in the early morning, so groggy that I would run into my bedroom door or anything else that I did not see in my Ambein stupor...What a trip...So I went back to the Tylenol Sleep.  Tylenol also puts out a product called 'Simply Sleep' with no extra pain medications.  I bet that would work better, since you can add your own pain medication. "Vino, mixed drinks, beer, shots...LOL.  Enjoy, just don't overdo.  We would like you to keep your liver....and keep posting on to this forum.

don't like mixing drinks, and there's so much i can't drink because of the IBS it causes, but beers ok

Not married, just me and my 5 yr old. left his dad when Billy was just 10 months due to 'domestic violence'  and he's kinda controlled me since, but now i live 300miles away from him, who knows?! may find a man silly enough to take on a gimp and her little man!     at 25, i think i still have time to find someone, never know maybe i won't be so much of a burden to take on if they change my meds at end of month.   fingers crossed!
