I read about this tragedy this morning and I'm suprised no one has posted

It's teriible for her and her family, and also all of us. Where will RA research
be if these deaths don't stop?I read about it, but I was still trying to find more information.

God rest her soul - she died for all of us.

I just read it and was just going to post about it actually.  It says that she had a mild case of RA and didnt want to risk her life for the research.  I guess it was a gene therapy injection she was given, only her 2nd one and it being checked for safety not if it would help those with RA.
My prayers are with her family.

How awful...i can't imagine what her family must be going through. Bless their hearts...

If memory serves me right...wasn't there a man that passed within the past couple of months involved in a study as well? I thought I remembered reading here...

How sad that she died to help so many of us.  It kind of sounded like her doctor wanted her to do this.  Now, that project will probably be scratched.  I have faith that something will be found that doesn't just destroy the immune system.

My prayers are with her husband and daughter!

Good work.  Cathy

Wow. That's so sad.I read this several days ago but remember it's still not proven that she died because of being injected with the gene therapy.  They're still investigating the cause of death and don't know.  I hope that they'll be a follow-up story with the full details of how and why she died.  I don't know about anyone else but since coming down with this disease I don't have such a huge fear of death anymore and I think this woman was much worse off than her husband is stating. The one article said she just had surgery to straighten her toes (I think it said 9 of them!). She was only 36 and thats alot of damage for 36, so I'm not so sure her case was mild. Maybe she was just looking for some help, relief, a cure. It's a chance we take when we enter a clinical trial and for many it's a chance they are willing to take. No one knows for sure what she was thinking when agreeing to the trial.

IF her death was caused by the drug and the civil suit wins, where will that leave the future of clinical trials? The lawyer sounds like an ambulance chaser, he has another case against a pharmacuetical company about another in a different clincal trial.

I feel such sorrow for the husband and child.

I believe Blessed is right. I also remember reading somewhere recently where a man had died while participating in a gene trial for RA. So incredibly sad. Ohhh Brisen...your signature almost made me have an accident! That is too funny!

You must remember though, most of the time (not sure about hers) people knwo this drug might kill them and they still say "ok".  I am not one to be a tester, but if nothing worked at all for me, it might be something that i would have looked into myself.

I just hope for the best and am happy the government has put a lock on this type of testing until they can look more into it so it won't happen to anyone else.

Alright. I've kept my mouth shut about testing because honestly, Justin might leave me if he found out I told this. So I'm not going to go into specifics, and don't ask me to.

Let's just say I'm all for it, because if it wasn't for testing and group studies, I 100% FOR A FACT WITHOUT A DOUBT WOULD NOT HAVE HIM IN MY LIFE.

So yeah. I'm very sad for her and her family, but you don't get into these kinds of groups without signing a whole lotta paper work first. I'm thankful that she was willing to go into the group and be a tester so that we might get better information about whatever drug it was they were testing. It's never the plan of the developers for someone to die, but the fact of the matter is that it's TESTING. Which means they don't know what's going to happen.

I hope her family can come to terms with that, and they find peace. She was very sweet to do what she did.
Cheesehead, I also wondered when I read she had nine of her toes straightened how severe her RA truly was.  I've had RA all my life and in all joints and have never had to have anything straightened.  Had hips and knees replaced but nothing straightened.

I didn't even know they 'could' straighten toes. Does that mean they can straighten fingers too??

I have a friend who recently had several toes straightened.  She does not have RA, but her toes were messed up from years of wearing shoes that cramped her feet, causing hammer toes and bunions.
