Fish Oil Follies | Arthritis Information

I know some of you here use fish oil... perhaps you've had the same problem I just had this past weekend?

I switched brands of fish oil - the old one was just enteric-coated regular fish oil.  The new one is enteric-coated CONCENTRATED fish oil - the percentage of EPA and DHA is much higher, and it's in ester form instead of fatty acid form.  Anyway, I didn't have any problems for the first few days, but then on Saturday, well, without going into the gory details, I was having the same sorts of lower-GI problems one gets when they eat too much olestra (fake fat used in low-fat junk food) or Alli (the weight-loss drug that prevents the body from absorbing some of the fat you eat). I've never used either of those products and I doubt I ever will!  Eww! Anyway, I stopped taking it for two days, and I started taking it again this morning but at a much lower dose.  I was taking 4 in the morning and 4 in the evening; I'm going to do 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening now.

To make matters worse - my allergies were horrible this morning!  Normally the fish oil really suppresses my allergies (hayfever, mostly, but also allergic to mold and some other stuff).  Grr.

And I hurt all over too - but I think that's because I was at my dad's house doing yardwork over the weekend, and I was also giving our oldest son another lesson on how to use the lawn mower.  He's getting better!!!  My little one was upset when we were pulling weeds - he was worried about the bumblebees not getting enough food if we took the weeds away.  I assured him that Grampa did not have the only weeds in town. Jasmine, I have the same problems if I use a certain brand of Fish Oil.  Do not go over 3600 mg when you are taking it.  I have noticed it helps with allergies and joints too.  Be careful.  Let us know how you are doing.  Ugh....that sounds awful.
That's cute about your son, though. What a nice kid!

this is why i usually buy my natural stuff at the health food stores. they only sell the best quality, and leave out the harsh additives.

d you know if it had any omega-6? O6 is known to CAUSE infla.

Hugs!

I've been using 6 to 8 grams/day for a couple of years now (with the blessings and guidance of the rheumatologist) with no problem - I'll cut it back to 4g/day for now, and talk w/her about it at my next appointment this fall.  It definitely caught me by surprise!!! Glad I wasn't out and about when the fish oil hit the fan, so to speak!!! [QUOTE=newbb]

It has more omega-3 (EPA/DHA) per capsule than the stuff I was taking.  Can't remember the brand, but it had nothing other than fish oil and the stuff the capsule is made out of (gelatin, etc). Screened for mercury, heavy metals, etc - no traces of those. When I go home tonight I'll pull out the bottle and read it again.

By the way, I take 10,000mg fish oil daily and so far have never had any
problems (only solutions!).
