Allergic reaction to MTX | Arthritis Information

Just curious if anyone has had allergic reactions to MTX. I've had outbreaks of rashes/hives for quite awhile. Not knowing what is was, I think it may be the MTX. I've been real careful to stay out of direct sunlight as of late. I took my dose this morning. .7cc and have had the usual gas problems but I am fully broken out on my chest and my arms are starting to welt up around the inside of my arms. Yikes! Would antihistamines help this? I'd rather not take anything else if I don't have to. TIA

Gosh, I haven't had that.  No doubt someone here has though.  Maybe you could try a topical cream, like benedryl?

I would give your doc a call, as this definitely could be an allergic reaction.  I was allergic to Plaquenil and was instructed to take Benadryl to counteract my allergy - but definitely get some input from your doc before you take anything.  I hope that you feel better very soon and am so sorry if you are allergic.

Please let us know how you are doing.

Hugs,

Jen

Took antihistamine. Dropped my clothes and now my trunk area is breaking out. Gotta be reaction. I'm not taking anymore mtx until I see my doc on the 20th. Screw it, it's been more trouble than its worth. Nice headache too. [QUOTE=Monk320]Took antihistamine. Dropped my clothes and now my trunk area is breaking out. Gotta be reaction. YIkes!  You might want to give your doctor a call tonight - and if it gets any worse, you might want to go to the local ER just in case.
Hi, could it be the mixture of drugs you are taking. I don't have any problems like you have. Lynda

I would highly recommend giving a call to the doctor.  Particularly if it's getting worse!  Take care - will watch for an update.

Monk, I agree with Jen! As someone who has several drug allergies, I'll tell you that all of my allergies start with a bad rash! They can be quite dangerous.

My Rheumy said I'm allergic to MTX, too, but on that one, I developed a severe cough that wouldn't go away. But allergies can show up differently on different people. However, with a rash, and just having taken your MTX I would at the very least get hold of the doctor tonight! If you can't, you might want to go to the ER.

Let us know what happens.

Monk:

I was one of the very rare folks who had a life-threatening reaction to MTX on the initial dose.  It was touch and go for a while.  Even though I had this type of reaction, my research showed that only 250 life-threatening/deaths occured with MTX.  I just got lucky.  LOL  Anyway, I definitely would call the doc.  If those hives spread any, get to the ER.  I am just getting over a case of hives that covered me from head to toe -- (with medical help!!!)   It's not fun and can affect your breathing.  Do take care and keep us posted.

I looked at my list of side effects given to me by the pharmacy and getting a rash is a rare side effect. I'd def. call the doctor.I'm alive !!!!!!! Just shaking my head wondering what this could be. I see my RA Doc Monday morning and I won't dose the mtx til I see her. Hives are just beautiful aren't they? Doc's office said to take the anti histamines and watch for breathing difficulties. Benadryl cream if I wanted. I need to get back to my allergist and test for food allergies as well. I'm allergic to all kinds of stuff, but this is the first time in my life I've had hives over and over.  Got me stumped. That would just stink if you are allergic to Mtx.  Make sure it is that before you throw it out.  I would hate to think you would be allergic to something that helps.  Gosh this stinks!!!

I was allergic to MTX but like an earlier poster, got a severe cough, which wouldn't budge rather than hives/a rash.

Hope things improve soon.

Yep, gotta watch out for those breathing difficulties!  If it happens, call 911.  Better to be safe than sorry!  I had an allergic reaction to a bug bite last year - I started wheezing, so I called 911 and chewed up some benadryl right away (YUCK!!!).  The ambulance arrived in about 2 minutes, and I sat inside for about 20 minutes while they monitored me.  I think they gave me oxygen (or maybe albuterol nebulizer?), but I can't remember now.  Anyway, it subsided, and they gave me the option of going to the hospital or going back inside.  I went back inside - our local ER is hell on earth.  Unless you're bleeding out or your heart has stopped, you'll sit for hours before being seen.

One time a few years ago, I broke out in hives on Easter night.  No breathing difficulties, but red, itchy hives all over the place.  They didn't go away (even with benadryl and hydrocortisone cream), so I ended up going to the doctor 2 days later.  I got a script for medrol dosepak which did clear it up in about a day.  The only thing I can think of is that I was watching the movie "The Ten Commandments" at the time and it made this devout heathen break out in hives!!!!!  To this day my husband teases me about breaking out in hives from The Ten Commandments.
