Marathon Training/Physical Therapist | Arthritis Information

Today's long walk is over and I walked 8.3 miles.  I took 3 Advil before we hit the trail but the minute we returned and I stopped walking, the knees started aching.  We have a physical therapist on board and he discussed some things to do for sore muscles, etc.  When I had an opportunity I quietly told him I had RA and wanted to know if everything he told everyone to do applied to me.  It didn't.  He had told everyone to go home after our longs walks and put cold water in a tub and add ice cubes.  That didn't sound like fun for me; I usually want a full-body heating pad. In fact, that is what he said I should do - heat is my friend.  Even air conditioning can make my joints hurt so I'm glad I don't need to sit in any icy tub.  It's time for more Advil now.  I think I should buy Advil stock; I'm a true Advil junky!

You Go Girl!  My husband is a Marathon runner and I have hurt myself so many times trying to keep up it's not even funny.  But if you are able and can still walk and get around, I think that is wonderful.

I would just be careful and try and incorporate what your doctor says to do with your activity.

Best of Luck to you always,

Gem

Cristene -

I am very happy to hear that you are still training for the marathon! You walked 8.3 miles?!?!?! I do not think I can walk 2 miles to save my life! Walking makes my toes hurts.

Glad you are doing so well!

               You're Awesome!!!!!

Question Cristene: do you walk at all during the week to keep up or do you just walk on the weekend?

Unicorn, I walk three times during the week.  The schedule is anywhere from 30 minutes to 60 minutes.  I have to admit that this is the worst I have hurt.  I could almost have cried last night but I contained myself, took more Advil and tried to keep my knees really warm.  I really want to keep doing this so I'm going to fight my doctor for more help.  I hate it when I say something hurts when I do something and the response back is to stop doing it.  I'm not doing anything anyone shouldn't be able to do.  I'm going to ask for an MRI (maybe I should say beg).  I have a strong need to see what is going on in there.  If I'm doing more damage then I need to know.  If that is the case, then I'll back down.

I tried bicycling once but that makes my hips hurt.  I can't dance because of my hips or do anything that puts stress on them but now it seems walking is starting to become a real problem also.

Okay, I'll see what the doc says and more forward from there.  Thanks everyone for the support.  I wish you could all walk with me (without pain).  I'm not athletic nor have I ever been so why I want to do this is beyond me.  I even dream I'm a jogger.  Go figure!

ok with all this talk about walking and pred weight gain i am going to go for a walk tonight... I just ate dinner, hamburgers and mac n cheese... I went shopping today ( my friend spent the money, i just tagged along) and then to a movie... (The Island is INTENSE!!!!!! but GOOD!!!!!!!) i cooked dinner and watched some tv and caught up on my reading for the day (this board!) I want to try to walk every day, and I HATE WALKING!!!!! but my A$$ is too big for my bike right now...

Wish me luck!!!!!!!   THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION CRISTENE!!!!!!

Cristene,  I know why you do it.  Exercise is amazing.  I can be so depressed and I don't want to do anything.  Go out and get some exercise - total change in attitude.  It also is great for self esteem.  Don't let that doc "ground you".  I think a lot of doctors don't care about quality of life, they just want to fix the problem you are complaining about.  If we were all geographically close, we would start an ra walking club, go for a walk together every night.  You too Unicorn.  For those of us that are in pain, we could carry you.  The beauty of walking is - It really is one step at a time

GLAD TO HEAR THE TRAINING IS GOING WELL JUST TRY NOT TO OVERDO IT!   CONGRATS GIRLFRIEND!!

Cristine and Uni you've got me wanting to get out there too.  I plan to walk tomorrow

Anyways. i am home safe and walked a mile... tomorrow Ill try it again.. had to stop a few times to let the knee rest, but if i lose weight by walking then the knee will get better, right!?

I'll talk to the doc and see what he thinks and if I'm not causing any permanent damage, I'll keep trying.  I'll keep you all posted.

Unicorn, I'm surprised you can use ice.  I always look for heat and that is what the physical therapist said I should use.  Now I want to ask the doc about that.  Personally, even cool air from the air conditioner sets me off so ice sounds a little scary.

Take care everyone!

Well i tried the heat and it wasnt working, so one time i tried the ice... gotta luv the ice packs i get with my embrel... and it worked... I wtill get stiff from air conditioning and cool weather, but this is like a localized area, just the spot on my knee that hurts. And i can pinpoint the one little area that hurts.. Its wierd.. i thought heat would be the best thing, too, but the ice works for me... I use it for about 20 minutes at a time...I guess it makes the swelling go down and then it doesnt hurt as bad... *SHRUG*

Unicorn, whatever works.  One thing I know for sure is that we all react in our own way.  I'm glad something helps.

OK I walked again today!!!!! Tonight actually... I only walked a half mile tonight, around my block, but I did it!!!!! My knee is still hurting and it was SOOOOO humid out there i had sweat rolling by the time i got home... Heres the worst!!!!!!!!!!!

MY AIR CONDITIONER BROKE TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But i walked!!!!!! thats the important thing.. right??? just dont know what im going to do for the rest of the summer!!!!!

Bummer, it's too hot not to have an air conditioner.  I hope you can get it fixed soon.

Glad your able to walk that far,i walk as much as I can.I have to walk around every 2-3hrs or sooooosoooo stiff.Could never go far like you.Good luck!
